Tamil Protesters Shut Down Two of Toronto's Highways →
Tamil Canadians — upset over the civil war in their native Sri Lanka — shut down both lanes of a downtown Toronto highway Sunday evening, and threatened to stay there until federal officials meet with them.
Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway were completely blocked by people who marched up the ramps at Spadina Avenue on to the highway that runs across the south end of the city. Traffic was backed up in both directions for several kilometres.
Police estimated as many as 2,000 protesters were taking part in the demonstration.
